Thyroid Cancer Surgery

Thyroid cancer surgery with careful attention to complete disease removal, voice nerve protection, parathyroid preservation, neck node management and cosmetic planning. The operation is selected according to tumor type, size, spread and patient priorities.

Total Thyroidectomy Central Neck Dissection Lateral Neck Dissection Remote-Access Options

Conditions Managed

  • Papillary, follicular and selected medullary thyroid cancers.
  • Suspicious thyroid nodules needing definitive surgery.
  • Central or lateral neck lymph node involvement.
  • Recurrent thyroid cancer after previous surgery or treatment.

Surgical Planning

  • Hemithyroidectomy or total thyroidectomy based on risk profile.
  • Nerve-aware dissection around the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
  • Neck dissection only when lymph node disease requires it.
  • Scar placement and selected remote-access options after evaluation.

Voice & Calcium Safety

The thyroid sits close to voice nerves and parathyroid glands. Surgical planning focuses on preserving voice quality and calcium balance while removing the cancer and involved lymph nodes appropriately.

Evaluation Before Surgery

  1. Review of ultrasound, FNAC or biopsy, thyroid function and calcitonin if indicated.
  2. Neck mapping to identify central or lateral lymph node disease.
  3. Voice assessment or laryngoscopy when symptoms or previous surgery raise concern.
  4. Discussion of lifelong thyroid hormone, radioactive iodine need and follow-up markers.

After Surgery

Recovery usually includes wound care, calcium monitoring, thyroid hormone planning and review of the final pathology report. Follow-up may include thyroglobulin monitoring, ultrasound surveillance or radioactive iodine referral.
