When Surgery Is Considered

Early esophageal cancer after endoscopic and imaging staging.
Locally advanced cancers after neoadjuvant therapy when operable.
Gastroesophageal junction tumors requiring chest and abdominal planning.
Selected strictures or complex lesions after multidisciplinary review.

Procedure Options

Minimally invasive esophagectomy using thoracic and abdominal access.
Ivor Lewis approach for lower esophagus or junction tumors.
McKeown approach for selected mid or upper esophageal tumors.
Lymph node dissection and stomach conduit reconstruction.

Nutrition Comes First

Difficulty swallowing can lead to weight loss before treatment begins. Nutrition optimization, breathing exercises and prehabilitation can improve readiness for major surgery and recovery.

Treatment Pathway

Endoscopy biopsy, CT, PET-CT and staging tests are reviewed together.
Fitness, nutrition, heart and lung reserve are assessed before surgery.
Chemotherapy or chemoradiation may be advised before surgery depending on stage.
Final pathology guides need for additional treatment and surveillance.

Recovery & Follow-Up

Recovery includes pain control, chest care, breathing exercises, gradual oral intake and diet counseling. Follow-up focuses on nutrition, swallowing, reflux management and recurrence surveillance.
