Thoracic Oncology Surgery

Surgical care for tumors inside the chest, including thymic tumors, mediastinal masses, chest wall tumors and selected pleural or airway-related cancers. VATS and robotic approaches are considered when they can achieve safe and complete tumor removal.

Robotic Thymectomy Mediastinal Tumors Chest Wall Resection Advanced VATS

Conditions Managed

  • Thymoma, thymic carcinoma and anterior mediastinal tumors.
  • Neurogenic, germ cell and other mediastinal masses.
  • Chest wall tumors requiring rib or soft tissue reconstruction.
  • Selected pleural, airway and metastatic thoracic lesions.

Surgical Approaches

  • Robotic or VATS thymectomy for suitable thymic tumors.
  • Mediastinal mass biopsy or complete resection after imaging review.
  • Chest wall resection with reconstruction when needed.
  • Open surgery for large, invasive or complex tumors when safer.

Multidisciplinary Care

Thoracic tumors often require coordination with pulmonology, radiology, anesthesia, medical oncology and radiation oncology. The plan depends on tumor type, location, resectability and overall fitness.

Workup & Decision Making

  1. Contrast CT or PET-CT review to understand size, location and invasion.
  2. Biopsy planning if the diagnosis is uncertain or chemotherapy may be needed first.
  3. Assessment of breathing reserve, cardiac status and anesthesia risk.
  4. Discussion of minimally invasive versus open surgery, drains and recovery timeline.

Recovery & Follow-Up

Recovery depends on the type of chest operation. Patients may need chest tube care, breathing exercises, pain control, physiotherapy and pathology-based decisions about radiation or chemotherapy.
